Just because there's technology, doesn't mean we have to use it -- does it?

The past 20 years has seen a technological revolution that is unprecedented.

The word discerning comes to my mind when thinking about how much to engage in the technological world, especially social media.  Cellular phones have become the norm -- many people now do not have landlines.  The use of laptops and desk top computers is clearly the norm.  Electronic devices such as various cameras and accessories abound.  The options are dizzying.  And the reckless use of computers and social media is alarming.

The most disconcerting form of technology from my perspective is the use of social media.  In my work as a therapist, I have seen countless numbers of people harmed by somoene who wants to bring harm to them.  This is a very public form of bullying and libelous behavior.  This is highly concerning to me as there are no controls for damage that people cause to another person.

Often people will engage in social media just because it is there, without really thinking of whether they want to even use it and if they do, why and how do they want to engage in social media.   We live in an information age where anyone can post something at their whim.  For someone who is not of a psychologically sound mind, or for someone who does not care about the impact of their behavior on someone else or for someone who intentionally wants to bring harm to another person, social media is a platform where vindictive and libelous behavior runs amok.

With respect to the use of social media, I have been asking my clients to consider why and how they want to use social media and to consider disengaging from it all together.  There are many ways to stay in touch with family and friends and many ways to disseminate information other than opening facebook and twitter accounts.  Setting boundaries in using social media by having a descerning mind or saying good-by to social media might be a wise decision.
